Dallas Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving showed up when the team needed him the most on Sunday against the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets.

The Mavericks and Nuggets were tied as Dallas had the last possession in regulation. Irving received the inbounds pass with less than three seconds left in the game. He came off of a screen and curled around with the ball.

Dallas won, 107-105.

Irving finished the game with 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

“Sometimes I spend just an hour straight just working on straight left-hand stuff,” Irving said of his game-winner. “Just being a small guard, you’ve just got to have a multitude of finishes. And that’s something I’ve been working on since I was a kid.”

Denver gave itself a shot, rallying back from a 13-point deficit. Jamal Murray hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 26 seconds left. Murray finished with 23 points.

Mike Tyson’s boxing match against Jake Paul this summer is likely to be one of the biggest spectacles the sports world will have to offer ahead of the Olympics.

And it doesn’t appear that the 57-year-old boxer who was spotted with a cane only two years ago is backing down from the challenge that the YouTube-star-turned boxer has presented to him.

Tyson posted a 14-second montage of training videos to his X account on Friday, and with it was a message to Paul.

“You still wanna f*** with me?”

WARNING POST CONTAINS GRAPHIC LANGUAGE

In the video, Tyson said he was on his third day of training.

The fight was announced this month. Tyson and Paul will square off on July 20 on Netflix at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” Paul said in a statement released by Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP).

“My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime.”

The fight will mark Paul’s second bout of the year and Tyson’s first since his exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

“He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT,” Tyson’s statement reads.

“It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

Women’s March Madness bracket live updates: NCAA Tournament matchups set; South Carolina No. 1 overall seed https://manitimes.com/womens-march-madness-bracket-live-updates-ncaa-tournament-matchups-set-south-carolina-no-1-overall-seed/ https://manitimes.com/womens-march-madness-bracket-live-updates-ncaa-tournament-matchups-set-south-carolina-no-1-overall-seed/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 02:16:29 +0000 https://manitimes.com/womens-march-madness-bracket-live-updates-ncaa-tournament-matchups-set-south-carolina-no-1-overall-seed/

As the women’s NCAA Tournament bracket started its reveal Sunday night, there was little uncertainty about who would be the field’s top seed. South Carolina, the SEC’s regular-season and conference tournament champion, is looking to become only the 10th team to complete an undefeated campaign with a national title.

The Gamecocks were chosen as the No. 1 overall seed and will play in one of the two Albany regions. The rest of the field will look to top the Gamecocks, who enter March Madness having won all 32 of their games. Although this year’s group has an entirely new starting lineup from the South Carolina team that also entered last year’s NCAA Tournament undefeated, the current iteration sports an offensive and defensive rating that ranks top-two nationally.

Coach Dawn Staley has relied on her roster’s depth, with five players averaging double-figure scoring and nine averaging double-digit minutes. Senior center Kamilla Cardoso, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-SEC selection, has been central to their success on both ends. Cardoso, however, will miss South Carolina’s first NCAA Tournament game after being ejected for fighting late in its SEC tournament championship victory.

The Gamecocks are looking to advance to their fourth consecutive Final Four, and a national title victory would be their second in three years.

Below are the full matchups in Albany 1:

No. 1 South Carolina vs. No. 16 Sacred Heart/Presbyterian

No. 8 North Carolina vs. No. 9 Michigan State

No. 4 Indiana vs. No. 13 Fairfield

No. 5 Oklahoma vs. No. 12 Florida Gulf Coast

No. 3 Oregon State vs. No. 14 Eastern Washington

No. 6 Nebraska vs. No. 11 Texas A&M

No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 15 Kent State

No. 7 Ole Miss vs. No. 10 Marquette

The 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections were revealed on Sunday with the UConn Huskies receiving the No. 1 overall seed for the Big Dance.

The Huskies are the defending national champions, having defeated San Diego State, 76-59, in last year’s final thanks to dynamite performances from Adama Sanogo and Tristen Newton. Sanogo turned pro after the tournament, but Newton returned and is leading the team with 15.2 points per game.

UConn is looking to become the first team to win back-to-back national champions since Florida did it in 2006 and 2007.

The First Four games tip off March 19-20. The Round of 64 is March 21-22, the Round of 32 is set for March 23-24, the Sweet 16 is March 28-29, the Elite Eight is March 30-31, the Final Four takes place April 6 and the National Championship Game is April 8.

The East Regional winner will play the West Regional winner and the South Regional winner will match up against the Midwest Regional winner in the Final Four.

NASCAR Truck Series drivers Nick Sanchez and Stewart Friesen got into a fight on Saturday night following the Weather Guard Truck Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The animosity between the two drivers began as Friesen and Sanchez were racing hard and jockeying for positioning in the top 10. Sanchez got into the rear of Friesen and spun his truck around. Sanchez also ran into the wall and messed up one of his tires. Friesen went for a ride and lost position.

Back in the pits, Friesen was really unhappy. One video appeared to show Friesen cursing at Sanchez and then grabbing him by the neck and jerking him forward. The two had to be separated.

“Couldn’t have waited one f—ing corner,” Friesen was heard saying.

“Ran top-3 all night until a loose wheel on our final stop put us in the back. Driving through the field up top when I got fenced. Fast truck, had a shot until I didn’t. Onto COTA,” Sanchez wrote.

“Up and down day at @ItsBristolBaby We searched for speed early and rebounded tonight with Stewart running in the top ten for most of the night. A late race incident in Stage 3 put us too far behind to finish with the speed we were showing,” Friesen wrote.

Fans usually don’t yawn in the crowd during the final two minutes of a basketball game, especially in a close one like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers were on Saturday night.

But, between clock malfunctions and replay reviews, the final 1:50 of the game lasted a total 22 minutes in a delay that led coaches and players to get frustrated on the court while fans couldn’t fathom what was happening.

It all started after Steph Curry missed his three-pointer with 1:52 left on the clock. The ball went off Andrew Wiggins and Jaxson Hayes as it went out of bounds, but it was called Warriors ball instead of Lakers.

Austin Reeves and official

As a result, Lakers head coach Darvin Ham challenged the call, but he didn’t expect it would lead to a delay that had the likes of Bad Bunny, Kim Kardashian and many others courtside, and all throughout Crypto.com Arena, waiting to restart the game.

The Lakers’ challenge was successful, but referees weren’t just looking at whose ball it was. They were reviewing LeBron James’ three-pointer that he hit over Curry at the 2:07 mark as well.

Referees determined James had stepped out of bounds before knocking down the shot that made it a 124-120 game. So, after ending the review, the score was changed back to 124-117.

SHAQ MAKES MAJOR DISTINCTION IN GOAT DEBATE AMONG LEBRON JAMES, MICHAEL JORDAN AND KOBE BRYANT

When play finally resumed, officials ordered a jump ball as it went off both Wiggins and Hayes. Once again, though, the play led to a coach’s challenge.

Hayes’ tip went to the baseline and Warriors polarizing forward Draymond Green threw it off Austin Reaves to try to regain possession. This one was a bit quicker, as the Lakers got the ball with Green out of bounds.

However, the stoppages in play continued as the shot clock was malfunctioning. Four attempts were made to resume play, but the clock was not cooperating, which ultimately led to boos from the crowd.

Things got so bad that the Lakers’ public address announcer had to verbalize the 24-second shot clock in five-second intervals, starting at 20.

“I haven’t seen that,” Ham told The Athletic. “I haven’t seen that before.

“It totally takes the air out of the building,” he added about the stoppages in play. “People were there – it’s a game that was going back and forth, they build a nice cushion for themselves, we dig back into it, and then we make a big shot, big play, they make a big shot, big play, guys are scrambling, competing their asses off and then boom – everything just stops. Now you’ve got fans getting a little antsy, thus the boos.”

James also spoke after the eventual Lakers loss, 128-121, where he was clearly displeased with the situation.

“I’ve never seen that be called before like that – in that particular time,” he said about his three-pointer not counting. “That was kind of weird. It took some momentum away from us.”

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, despite his team being on the winning end, didn’t like that James’ three-pointer didn’t count either.

“I don’t like the rule you can go back and look at an out-of-bounds [play]. LeBron’s three – that seems to happen once or twice a year. Would love to see that rule go away.”

Kerr also spoke about how the momentum was affected in the building during the break.

“It was bizarre,” he said. “Seems like a few times a year you get clock issues. That’s about as extreme as I’ve never been a part of, where the backup doesn’t work either. I felt bad for the fans. That was a great game and all of a sudden the last two minutes, everyone’s just kinda looking at each other wondering what to do.”

In women’s soccer, it is not uncommon to see teammates date one another.

United States Women’s National Team members Ali Kreiger and Ashlyn Harris were actually married for four years before beginning to divorce last year.

Overseas, Chelsea FC Women’s teammates Jess Carter and Ann-Katrin Berger are in a relationship.

However, their manager, Emma Hayes, disapproves.

“Player-coach relationships, they’re inappropriate, player-to-player relationships are inappropriate…” Hayes said earlier this week.

“One player’s in the team, one’s not in the team, one might be in the last year of their contract, one might not be. We all know, those of us that have been in the women’s game for a long period of time, those things have been happening in dressing rooms. Longer term, it would be ideal… where you don’t have to deal with that.”

Carter, of course, caught wind of those comments, and wasn’t a fan. She liked a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, that criticized Hayes, soon-to-be the manager of the USWNT.

“You don’t have to justify what Emma said btw, it’s a flawed answer no matter how you spin it. There’s a fundamental difference between player-player and player-coach relationships and that’s imbalance of power. She could’ve said anything but that,” one liked-post read.

“[I]f I seriously thought player x player relationships were inappropriate, I probably wouldn’t have signed the well known girlfriend of my club captain for a world-record fee,” said another.

After Carter’s likes made the rounds, Hayes revealed that the two had a one-on-one talk, and she addressed the rest of her players.

Hayes, via ESPN, said she “let myself down” with her original comments, but added she does not “take those things back.”

However, “even if we have disagreements in life, we mustn’t play them out publicly.” Hayes cited how the players came together for a hard-fought 3-1 win on Friday that shows disagreements don’t have to result in negativity on the pitch.

“We must have them conversations with each other but it’s an important thing you must do in a workplace and everybody understands and I think you saw from the performance tonight that everybody is absolutely invested in what we are doing.”

For the first time in three years, the NASCAR Cup Series spring Bristol race in Tennessee will take place on concrete as the 2024 season comes to an even shorter track than what Phoenix Raceway was this past weekend.

The Bristol spring race was on dirt for the last three seasons. Christopher Bell, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano were the winners of the dirt surface. In 2020, the last time it was run on concrete, Brad Keselowski took home the victory. Busch won twice before that.

As the 2024 season has shown early, anything can happen in these races. There has yet to be a multiple-time winner this season. Last Sunday, Bell held off Chris Buescher and Ty Gibbs in the Shriners Children’s 500 in Phoenix for his first win of the regular season.

Kyle Larson, Daniel Suárez and William Byron are the other drivers who have victories this year.

Bristol Motor Speedway is an entirely different beast, as most drivers understand. The length of the track is just over a half-mile long and there have been many retaliation crashes and heated tempers in the past. On Sunday, there will be plenty of hard racing and interesting strategy during the Food City 500.

Here’s what else to know about the race.

Weather

Sunday should be a nice spring day for the drivers. Bristol is set to have a low of 41 degrees and high of 60, according to FOX Weather.

There are four turns with 24- to 28-degree banking in the corners, 5- to 9-degree banking on the front stretch and 4- to 8-degree banking on the backstretch.
